This species is used ornamentally for its beautiful fall leaf coloring. The wood is somewhat knotty.

Nothofagus, named for false beeches or beeches of the south. The epithet, antarctica, is a Latinization and alludes to the fact that they were harvested in the Magellanes Strait, which is considered in the Antarctic region.
