Ñirre Forest

Ñirre forests are deciduous forest located in the Pilmaquén pampa, between 700 and 850 meters in altitude. Ñirre forests reach some 10m in height, and in autumn present a red coloration, before losing their leaves. In Ñirre forests, one can also find el radal (Lomatia hirsuta) and el notro (Embothrium coccineum), and in wetter sites, el chacay (Discaria chacaye) a spiny bush. In clearings and in the understory grow pastures of the grass Anthoxanthum juncifolium.

It is the most abundant tree species in the reserve, and is one of the largest in size. It is used as a decorative tree.

Nothofagus, false beech or beech of the south; dombeyi, it is dedicated to J. Dombey, a french doctor who accompanied H. Ruiz and J. Pavón in their expedition to the viceroyalty of Lima; their visit to Chile in 1782 represents the botanical discovery of the country by the Spanish Crown.

Nothofagus, named for false beeches or beeches of the south. The epithet, antarctica, is a Latinization and alludes to the fact that they were harvested in the Magellanes Strait, which is considered in the Antarctic region.
